Dropbox in KDE (Linux)

Dropbox on Linux/KDE without Gnome/GTK+ stuff
This is a guide for how to set up dropbox under (linux) KDE4, without having to install nautilus and other Gnome/GTK+ dependencies to bloat your system, by running the Dropbox daemon. It’s not a perfect KDE4 integration by any means, but it will show you the tray icon and seameslly syncronize your ~/Dropbox folder.

Just gnomes...
1. Get the source Linux files:
2. Extract the files in your home directory

Extract files to your home folder
3. Go to “System Settings”

Press Alt + F2 for Krunner launcher and type in "System settings"
4. Go to “Advanced/Autostart”

Go to "Advanced/Autostart"
5. Click “Add Script…” and paste this path “/home/username/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd” into the dialog box, make sure you change “username” with your own, then click “OK”.

Add Script...
6. When you log into your session again, the Dropbox icon will appear in your tray.
Dropbox daemon running.

Revolutionary window manager
by Dread Knight on Jul.17, 2009, under Open Source
Greetings beloved readers!
This stuff is so awesome that as you can see, it even determined me to blog about it. Play some awesome music, hold tight in your chair and watch this:
Here are a few points
- you can click on empty space to launch new apps
- only close buttons on windows
- color coded windows
- window headers don’t overlap, so no need for a panel to list all open windows
- maximizing a window makes the panel blend in nicely with the window
- very cool way of minimizing applications or move them to other workspaces
- easy to look behind maximized windows
- nicely animated
- damn intuitive
- low learning curve
- a pleasure to use for sure!
Keep in mind this is only a mockup, but should be doable with compiz more or less.
I really hope GNOME3 will look like that, or that KDE4 will have a setup like that… OR… even see something built from scratch, as long as it does the job.
Fav it, rate it, share it, comment it; you can also find it on Gnome-look.org
Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Linux sucks.
by Dread Knight on Apr.30, 2009, under Open Source
I’ve seen this awesome presentation recently about linux. It wasn’t a flame war but a real and well argumented discussion. Linux sucks for the desktop and we know it.
But even so, we love it, keep using it. Because it really needs us and we have to keep believing in it no mater what.
The subtitle of the presentation was “And what can be done to fix it“.
If you don’t have the time to watch it, the conclusion is:
- use standardized back-ends for package management, audio & video frame works etc
- things need to be made simple
- commercial software must be encouraged as well
- free & open source software is not actually 100% free, because developers are human beings and need to eat (they sacrifice more than enough already contributing to open source, so help out and even consider donating)
- DON’T encourage useless code duplication!
If you liked it, please digg it!

If you are not familiar with the game, go to http://www.yofrankie.org/
To sum it up: it’s an open source game developed by the Blender Foundation, using blender and it’s amazing game engine.
No binaries included, to run it go grab blender from www.blender.org (8mb, open source, cross platform) and after you install it and downloaded the files as well, go into levels folder and open start_menu.blend and them press P.
- Tip 1: When playing from source, hover mouse over the 3d view-port and press shift + space in order to maximize it!
- Tip 2: You can make your own binary as well!
Go to File and click Save game as run time…
If you’re interested in another open game project developed by the Freezing Moon NPO using blender, please join IRC on server Freenode, channel #FreezingMoon (or just go over here).
